When a child is diagnosed with a serious illness, the biggest barrier is not always the treatment itself.

Sometimes the biggest barrier is simply knowing how to get there.

For many families, traveling to a large hospital is overwhelming. They may have never visited the city before. They may not know where to park, which entrance to use, how to register, what documents to bring, or how long appointments typically last. When a child begins chemotherapy or another specialized treatment, the process can feel confusing and intimidating before the first appointment even begins.

Project Gerson helps children and their families access specialized medical care when transportation or navigation would otherwise become a barrier.

Support may include:

• Transportation to and from appointments

• Guidance through the hospital and registration process

• Help gathering required documents

• Explaining what to expect before visits or treatments

• Connecting families with trusted organizations and resources

• Ongoing communication and follow-up throughout treatment

Our role is to remove barriers. We do not believe every problem requires us to provide every service ourselves. Transportation is one tool and guidance is another. Relationships with hospitals, nonprofits, and local partners are another. By helping families navigate an unfamiliar system, we make specialized medical care more accessible.

Today, our Medical Access program focuses on helping children from western Honduras access pediatric cancer treatment. We chose this focus intentionally because it is where we have developed experience, built trusted relationships, and created a repeatable system of support. Rather than trying to solve every medical challenge, we believe it is more responsible to do one thing well and continue improving it over time.

We receive many requests for assistance beyond pediatric cancer treatment. We document those requests carefully because they help us identify unmet needs and understand where future systems may be necessary. Until we have the expertise, partnerships, and capacity to provide meaningful support in those areas, we remain focused on the work where we know we can make the greatest difference.

As we continue learning, this program may expand thoughtfully over time. Any future growth will be guided by evidence, strong partnerships, and our ability to build sustainable systems that genuinely improve access to care, not simply by the number of requests we receive.
